Computed tomography, or CT as it is commonly called, is a technique that has the ability to image thin sections of all parts of the body, in three planes (transverse, coronal, sagittal), and this is done with a rotating X-ray tube (ionizing radiation) that rotates around the part of the body that is to be imaged. The X-rays exit the tube, pass through the body and are captured by a detector opposite the X-ray tube. The information from here is processed by a powerful computer that converts the information into images of the organ being investigated. In this way, it can provide detailed information about many parts of the body, including the lungs, bones, soft tissues, heart and blood vessels. It can be used to diagnose and monitor many conditions. A major advantage of CT scanning is that it is a quick procedure. Depending on the type of scan required, the entire procedure, including preparation time, will take approximately 15-20 minutes. This is particularly important in animals with compromised health conditions where prolonged general anesthesia may pose increased risk.
