Cyprus rings third vulture chick of the year

The third vulture chick hatched in Cyprus this year has been fitted with a ring, officials announced Thursday.

Earlier, GPS tracking enabled rescuers to locate the first chick of the season after it became stuck in thick vegetation during its inaugural flight over the British bases.

The Game and Wildlife Service, together with the British bases environment department and BirdLife Cyprus, retrieved the bird and transferred it to the Wildlife Care and Rehabilitation Centre, where it will stay until it is fit for release.

Authorities stressed that the episode underscores the value of GPS transmitters, which let conservation teams monitor young vultures, spot trouble early and learn more about the hazards they face in their first weeks. Ongoing surveillance and collaboration among the groups remain vital for the recovery of Cyprus’ vulture population.
